    Temples and Antiquities

Temples and Ancient Sites have always been to me, an evidence of Eternal Mystery reflecting the ingenuity and depth of knowledge present in the Ancestors..

Through out the years, I have been privileged to visit and photograph the lands of the Maya, in the Yucatan in Mexico, and in Guatemala, and El Salvador and travelled to Sri Lanka and visited temples and shrines of Buddhism, and the Hindu faith.

Where ever I have been, the Land, the Ancient Places, and the Living Traditional Cultures hold mystery and meaning and are a priceless treasure.

“Our elders have much to say, often not in words... sometimes only with a quiet smile or in the way they hold an ear of corn.. From the high mesas of Hopi land, to the mysterious Black Hills of South Dakota, there is something very special about Traditional Original American Life.

"I have worked with and photographed Native Peoples for more than 30 years. The relationships that have grown over time mean a lot to me. After retiring from the Adopt A Grandparent Program, I still continue the connections with a very special group of individuals who have been guiding lights in my life."

    Gail Russell

I was a painter and printmaker before I became a photographer.

My first one woman show of paintings and silkscreens was at fifteen years of age. Later, I went on to study at The Albright School of Fine Arts, Buffalo, N.Y. and Pratt and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. In 1968 I changed mediums and picked up a camera for the first time.

"I think that the role the artist in this world is to bring glimpses of Truth and human/world connection The primary reason I create images to remind us of those moments of beauty that life sometimes gifts us... and be visual reminders for our Hearts and Spirits... this is what I strive for in my work.

I have lived in Taos New Mexico for the past 25 years, “Taos is unique, it is alive with a mix of all of our cultures... Native Americans, Southwestern life and landscapes, catch my focus... and the Sunbursting over Our Mother Mountain, plants my feet here.”

“I have worked with Native People most of my life and been adopted into several tribes and along the way. In one area of my work, I strive to create images that reflect Traditional Native American Life. and Yes, Edward S. Curtis is my hero.”

Russell’s unique technique of hand colored work has become a trademark. The color is not created in a computer. All the images are created from original photographs, the black and white or sepia toned prints are painted by the artist with oil colors directly on the surface of the photograph. The painting is hand done with traditional oil colors, Russell has developed a special technique of removing parts of the color, creating unusual highlights and balances of light.

Russell's images of southwestern culture and landscapes, Temples and Antiquities and Inspirational images have been in museums, galleries, and in the pages of national and international magazines for the past 25 years. Her work Spotlights colorful ceremonials, contrasting with the simple everyday activities of peoples living in tradition. Striking images of ancient sites and landscapes, her usage of light sometimes transmits a spiritual message.
