What is SOULSPEAK?

SOULSPEAK is a simplified, contemporary version of an ancient form of oral poetry used by our earliest ancestors, long before we learned to read and write.

SOULSPEAK allows anyone to express his or her emotions in a beautiful, healing and human way. It is can be learned almost instantaneously, by ANYONE.

Once you learn it, you can teach it to others. In any way you want. We plant the seed, you make it grow.

SOULSPEAK consists of a simple story or refrain spontaneously spoken out to rhythmic music in antiphonal (speaker/ responder) fashion. This inborn, communal, spoken poetry has the unique ability to tap into the collective unconscious, or group soul, where we are always together.

SOULSPEAK is a very beautiful, healing form of poetry, and very close to prayer. Most importantly, it is a part of our human nature, much as our ability to gossip and joke are. It sounds complicated, but we already know how to do it. It simply has to be reawakened. Let us help you.

Some History Behind Our SOULSPEAK and our Programs

SOULSPEAK was originally founded as SOULSPEAK/Sarasota Poetry Theatre, and there are a number of programs and activities available to those who are interested.

SOULSPEAK has a sound like no other. It is the sound of the soul speaking. The body instinctively recognizes it as something very close to prayer. You can hear the sound of SOULSPEAK in the CDs recorded by our group, MANY VOICES of SOULSPEAK. Some of them are on Radio SOULSPEAK. Many others can be downloaded free from our web page. The oral, multi-voiced, musical poetry created by MANY VOICES is a contemporary adaptation of pre-literate, multi-voiced, musical poetry. We see poetry as those moments when the soul, or unconscious, the dreaming self, the part of us we can't control, joins with the conscious self to sing the soul's song. As a result, our poetry takes the form of audio CDs, soundtracks, and videos as well as conventional text publications. Some of our videos are documentaries on the use of SOULSPEAK, and some are art videos that we consider visual poems. All can be ordered from our web page www.SOULSPEAK.org. A good part of these can be can be downloaded free of charge. Visit us.

SOULSPEAK, which is also the name of our non-profit organization, was founded by poet/artist Justin Spring with the help of fellow poet/dancer/artist Scylla Liscombe in 1992. The founders believe that the spontaneous, communal speaking of poetry is an instinctive human act that can be re-awakened in anyone who is willing to surrender to it. We call our contemporary adaptation of that poetry SOULSPEAK. It is a primal, largely unconscious, poetry that is close to prayer not only in its beauty, and felt truth, but also in its ability to heal deep emotional wounds. We run many SOULSPEAK programs for at-risk children and adults-in-therapy, people in grief and mother-child bonding that utilize SOULSPEAK's healing power to help participants heal and move forward in their lives. Over 3300 children and adults in over 55 schools and organizations have participated in our SOULSPEAK programs. To this end SOULSPEAK has released two healing DVDs:

    1) Mother Child Bonding is a unique instructional DVD for establishing a true soul bond between mother and child starting in the womb and lasting throughout the life of the mother and child. There are also instructions for including the father and for teaching the child to SOULSPEAK once he or she begins to speak. The instructions are simple and can be learned simply by watching and listening to the DVD.

    2) The SOULSPEAK Healing DVD for Grief Recovery, Support and Healing is a unique DVD that will give you several simple techniques for allowing the soul to speak of its grief. The techniques for reawakening this ability are learned simply by viewing and listening to the DVD and then imitating what you have observed. In a sense it is exactly how we learned to speak as infants. There are also instructions for including other family members in the SOULSPEAK grieving process.

Visit SOULSPEAK and find out what they have to offer.
