She first came to Taos from New York City in 1992 to attend a writing workshop given by Natalie Goldberg, and 12 years later she started working there. The house is a well-known retreat to artists, writers, photographers, and musicians. Mabel dreamed of starting an art colony in Taos, but the people who came as visitors took the solace and inspiration offered, fulfilled their own needs and then returned to the outside world and their own lives.
